'Building on Firm Foundations'

Intent

St George's C of E Primary School recognises the value of Physical Education (PE). We fully adhere to the aims of the National Curriculum for PE to ensure that all children achieve the following:

  • Physical active for a sustained period of time
  • Engagement in a competitive sport
  • Have an active and healthy life

It is our aim that through membership with PSSP we provide our children with a wealth of PE, sport and engagement in enjoyable competitive activities.

Implementation

PE is taught as an area of learning in its own right as well as underpinning all of children's other learning experiences. It is taught twice a week in KS1 and KS2. In our EYFS, children access one formally taught lesson a week and have full access to both gross and fine motor skills in their provision.

We teach our children to:

  • Have fun and enjoy success in sport
  • Have the opportunity to participate and achieve in PE at their level
  • Develop their sportsmanship by experiencing positive competition
  • Learn in a safe environment
  • Have the foundations for lifelong physical activity

We deliver lessons taught by sports coaches from District Sports and PSSP and District Sports also leads lunchtime activities to ensure we are maximising physical activity within our school. At St George's we use the PEPassort App and we have tailored the design of our curriculum to ensure skill progression as children develop.

At the end of every term, we hold intra-house competitions where chidlren can practice their new skills and develop their sportsmanship.

Impact

At St George's, PE is taught as a basis for lifelong learning. The children have access to a wide range of activities and are taught well, to enable them to become physically active for life. A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all children to succeed and excel in competitive sports, and other physical domains and improves their overall physical health and well-being. Opportunities to compete in sports and other activities builds character and helps to embed values such as fairness, acceptance and respect.

Please see our PE action plans and sports premium documents in the key information section.

PE is a priority at ST George's. We are pleased to take part in the School Games Mark that we currently hold a gold award for.
